Plumbing and Heating Service

Do You Need a Professional for Hot Water Heater Installation?

Thanks to YouTube, many people think that it'll be easy to install their own water heaters instead of hiring a plumbing and heating service. In reality, this is not the case for the vast majority of homeowners. There are several factors that make it better to get professional hot water heater installation.

One of the first is the one that's most visible: the size of water heater tanks. Except for the smallest ones, they're quite hefty even when empty. Wrestling one into position requires a lot of strength and dexterity. This is especially true of the big, family-sized ones that can hold enough hot water for a couple of showers and a run of the washing machine.

If you have an old water heater to get rid of, the problem is greatly compounded. You'll need to get the water out of the old one, disconnect it from its plumbing and fuel source, and then wrestle it outside. Then, you have to dispose of it somehow. This will typically require the use of a truck if you don't get someone to pick it up for you.

On top of all of this, you'll need to connect your new hot water heater to a fuel source. Typically, this will either be electricity or natural gas, though propane heaters also exist. Natural gas can build up and explode if there's a leak in the connection, and of course, electricity can shock you if you make a mistake.

With these things in mind, it's a good idea for most people to hire a plumbing and heating service to install a new water heater. The service will bring it to the right spot, connect it up, and take the old one away. It's well worth the cost.
