Now that spring is here, it's time to catch up on home maintenance. Plumbing is one thing that homeowners often overlook during this time; however, it is important nonetheless. Follow this spring plumbing checklist to ensure you are ready for warmer weather.
#1. Test Outdoor Plumbing
Fire up your sprinklers and garden hoses to ensure they are working properly. Allow them to run for a few minutes in order to clear out the lines and alleviate any pressure that might have built up during the winter months.
#2. Check for Leaks
Check for leaks underneath all sinks as well as near appliances such as your washing machine. Now that it's a bit warmer, you can access your crawl space and look for pools of water too. If the idea of doing so makes you squeamish, then give us a call, and we will be happy to inspect it for you.
#3. Turn Shutoff Valves On and Off
While you're checking for leaks, don't forget to turn your shutoff valves off and then back on again. This will keep them loosened up and working properly in the event you ever need them. If they seem a little stiff, a light spritz of WD-40 will have them operating efficiently again.
#4. Flush your Water Heater
Lime and calcium deposits can wreak havoc on your elements and can significantly shorten your appliance's lifespan. Accordingly, water heaters should ideally be flushed at least twice a year. This is another task that many homeowners feel uncomfortable with, but here at Lamont Plumbing and Heating, we are always happy to assist.
#5. Inspect your Sump Pump
Unplug your sump pump and remove it from its pit. Turn it over to ensure that nothing has become lodged in the impeller. If you have an outdoor sump pump, there could be leaves and twigs that will need to be removed, as well.
#6. Pay Attention to Standing Water
Pools of water in your yard could signal a problem with your septic or sewer lines. In particular, pay attention to your grass. If certain spots appear greener than others, this is a good sign that your septic system is full or that your sewer lines need to be cleared.
#7. Be Mindful of Slow-Moving Drains
Along with standing water, slow-moving drains are another sign of clogged plumbing or sewer lines. In some cases, a commercial drain-cleaning product will help, but for more serious clogs, you need a professional plumber.
